FAQ

How Do I Place An Order?

Choose what type of harness (padding) you want  (for 'wet/mud' or cold), the size(s) and how many harnesses you would like - and enter your payment information. Your card will NOT be charged until you have heard back from me and we have come to an agreement on your order! The reason is that every order is treated as a pre-order. Sometimes there will be harnesses "ready to ship" in which case you will be notified of that, your payment will be processed and the harness(es) ship within 3-5 business days. But often the harness(es) you order will have to be sewn; and it is not unusual for there to be an even long wait-list (particularly during late fall and winter as I am training dogs). Therefor, when you place the order, you can expect to be contacted about the expected time frame for the completion of your order -- and this works with you, and you agree to complete the order, your payment will be processed. Please do notice that you will not "be in line" and the sewing of your harnesses will not begin before your payment is processed.

Payment and Shipping

When you place an order your card payment will be authorized, but your card will not be charged. You will be contacted about the expected time frame for the completion of your order -- and this works with you, and you agree to complete the order, your payment will be processed.

Your order will ship 3-5 business days after it is completed. Harnesses are shipped anywhere in the world. Please notice that customs can delay packages by up to 6 weeks. This doesn’t happen often, but it can.

Shipping in the United States (including Alaska & Hawaii) is FREE. Shipping elsewhere will be calculated based on weight and cheapest way of shipping, unless you request otherwise. I will calculate the shipping cost and contact you with the total. Once we have agreed on this cost I will proceed charging your cost and then fulfilling the order.

Returns & Refunds

Returns and exchanges can only be made if the harness has not been worn/used. Returns are to be made within 30 days of purchase in order to receive a refund. Refunds will not be issued for any returns made after 30 days of purchase. If your order was shipped incorrectly (if I made an error), I will refund the shipping. If your order was not placed correctly (if you made an error), I will not refund the shipping, but I will exchange your order for something different.

Where are the harnesses made?

Made by hand (on sewing machine + with needle and thread hand sewing)  harnesses are sewn in Alaska.

What is the difference between fur and foam padding?

Caribou fur is the best padding - but it will damage in muddy and wet conditions. Foam padding is very soft but turns hard in temperatures below freezing and will then cause rub on your dog.  I use the MUD harness with foam padding in my summer and fall training while my team encounters puddles and until the temperature is below freezing. On runs in below freezing temperatures I use the GENTLE harness with the caribou fur padding.

The padding is hand sewn onto the strap. This allows you to remove it and replace it with the same kind of padding OR with the padding that fits your current conditions. For many many years I have been changing from foam to fur come "winter" - and back to foam come "summer" - on the same set of harnesses.

How to choose the right size?

The most important measures when deciding which size of a Chukchi harness will fit your dog is 1) the chest, and 2) the neck. Go up one size or choose the larger size if between sizes. if in doubt always just contact me with your dog's breed and approximate weight!  Notice, please also contact me with that info if your dog has a very broad / large head!

Measure around the neck at its base (where it connects to the rest of the body). Measure the chest circumference at its deepest point - this varies from breed to breed / dog to dog - on some dogs its a little ways behind the front leg, others its right behind the front legs.

The following guide line is based on the neck + chest:

SMALL   (blue ball, blue thread on button)
Neck: 14 - 19 inch/ 35 - 50 cm

Chest: up to 29 inch / up to 75 cm

MEDIUM   (green ball, green thread on button)
Neck: 19.5 - 22 inch/ 50 - 55 cm

Chest: +29 inch / + 75 cm

LARGE   (red ball, red thread on button)
Neck: 22 - 23.5 inch / 55 - 60 cm

Chest: + 29 inch / + 75 cm

X-LARGE   (black ball, black thread on button)
Neck: +23 inch/ +60 cm

Chest: +32 inch / +80 cm

Check out the Sizing page for comparison sizing to X-back harness as well as for pictures of how to measure!

How to choose which buttonhole?

Close the belly strap with the belly strap going under the deepest part of the chest on your dog - then choose the button hole that allows you to have the width of two fingers between the dog and the strap. You want it so that the dog can sit as well as curl up (when resting) without the strap being so tight it digs into the dog.

I most often fold the strap back up to put the button through another buttonhole.

The strap will slide back as the dog is running (making it look loose, cause it is no longer under the deep part of the chest), but it is the correct fit. A Chukchi harness is a loose fitting harness and it will slide around on the dog as the dog chooses how to run / where the pressure point lays on its body.
